The paper is handmade from the bark of the Lokta or Daphne papyracea plant, a shrub not unlike a large raffia plant, that grows in the foothills of the Himalayas.
Mountain villagers trek to where the lokta grows, harvest it, then transport it back to the village. It is boiled, cleaned, then beaten with wooden mallets to product the fibre pulp. It is then mixed with water and poured into a shallow floating frame made from bamboo poles stretched with canvas, then sun-dried to produce the crisp long fibre paper. Once dry it’s ready to be dyed and printed by skilled craft makers.

Our colourful recycled notebooks and beautifully handmade gift wrap are sourced from Get Paper Indistries (GPI), an incredible, socially aware cooperative in Nepal.
The charity work they do in the local area has earnt them many awards, from their support of people affected by HIV and Aids, to establishing schools to support the education of underprivileged children.
Milan, a founding member, is a man with an amazing passion for life, and he and his team are making a huge difference, as we’ve been fortunate enough to see with our own eyes. As our own small contribution to their work, Paper High sponsor 10 girls to attend one of their schools.
By making a purchase, you are helping to continue the fantastic work of our producers.

We're glad to hear you like the gift wrap. Apologies for the plastic. We are doing our best to cut out plastic wherever possible. We have changed all of our packaging for postage to plastic-free options and as far as possible are working on ways to eliminate plastic from our suppliers where items are sent to us from overseas. Some solutions are easy, some are a little more complicated, but please rest assured that we will keep working on it until we have eliminated plastic completely. |
