Fair Trade fortnight is an opportunity to highlight the benefits of doing what we do and more importantly why we do it.  At Paper High we genuinely believe that “Fair Trade” is basically good business.

Paper High only work with small family businesses, community incentives, charities and accredited Fair Trade organisations and our promise is that every product on we sell is Fair Trade as defined by the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO).

It is an absolute must to us that we have a mutually beneficial relationship with our fair trade suppliers. We love and respect the people we work with and have got to know them and their families well over the years and consider them true friends. It is always a joy to visit them and catch up on all the news.

Here’s a little bit about the inspirational organisations that we are proud to work with;

Our colourful rag rugs are made by The Barefoot college; a fantastic organisation based in Rajasthan India.  The Barefoot College was established in 1972 to help rural communities to become self-sufficient and sustainable by working with solar energy, water, education, health care, rural handicrafts, communication, women’s empowerment and wasteland development.

Over the last few years, we have branched out into homeware products. We are involved with two great Fair Trade organisations TARA Projetcs and Noah’s Ark who supply us with our beautifully handcrafted homeware products.  TARA Projects began in the early 1970s with the object of creating opportunities and support for economically disadvantaged, home-based artisans and craftspeople of Delhi and its surrounding areas.

Over the years the project has extended its work into the adjoining states of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan. The second organisation we work with is Noah’s Ark. Noah’s Ark work with around 49 different artisan groups, involving approximately 500 artisans. Their focus on education and capacity building enables the people they support to become more aware of fair working conditions and the environment in order to prove the value, cultural heritage and beauty of their hand made products. The longer term effect is that they are working collectively towards poverty eradication

All our colourful gift-wrap is handmade by Get Paper Industries (GPI), an incredible, socially aware cooperative in Nepal. They have won many awards for the charity work they do in the local area, which includes supporting people affected by HIV and Aids and establishing schools to support the education of underprivileged children.

We got a mention in their latest newsletter “Mr. Mark Woolley – Director of Paper High, provided scholarship to the students of Anita Milan International School (AMIS).” From working with GPI we provide scholarships for six children from marginalized family backgrounds.

All our beautiful and colourful felt products are handmade by an inspirational Fair Trade producer which provides training and work for women within some of the poorest communities in Nepal – to date the company has empowered more than 100 women

Our elephant dung products come from the Maximus elephant conservation trust. Maximus has its workshop in the grounds of the Millennium Elephant Foundation (MEF), a small charity that cares for sick, old and disabled elephants. They are also working hard to resolve the conflict between elephants and local communities, a critical concern as the elephants’ natural habitat decreases and they turn to eating farmers’ crops. Working with initiatives like Maximus, they are able to show the positive relationship local economies can have with these amazing animals.

So there you have it there are billion and one reasons to shop at Paper High for Fair Trade products. It really does make a difference. You may not see it firsthand but buying Fair Trade gives people a better future, people. Fair trade organisations can help people to overcome everyday challenges such as providing food and education for their family as well as allowing them to maintain a positive wellbeing
