One thing we all agree on at Paper High is how beautiful buffalo leather is. It is one of the most popular items we sell, be it a bag, journal or album. It is incredibly versatile, comes in a variety of colours, plus it has a stunning rustic look and feel that will only get better with age. It really is a future-proofed material so we completely understand why people are so obsessed with it!
Even though it is popular, we get a lot of questions about how to care for it, how it is made, is it ethical, what the texture is like, and so on. We want to give you a foolproof guide on this super sustainable leather so you can purchase with confidence and have an item that will last you for years to come. In this blog, we will cover every burning question we’ve been asked as well as any we think is important for you to know!
How Is Buffalo Leather Made?
The buffalo leather we provide is handmade from start to finish. Even the processing of the raw skin to the finished product is done without the use of any machines! The techniques used by our producers are done with a huge amount of care allowing for the leather to not only look fantastic but also reducing things such as the smell that the leather can create.
The raw buffalo skin is sourced from the Indian cities, Nasirabad and Raipur, where they then begin the process to create this beautiful leather. As soon as the leather is sourced, it is first soaked in a solution of lime (choona) and sodium sulphate for 15 to 20 days. This removes hair from the raw skin and prepares it for further processing.
The hides are then stitched at the edges with a local grass, known as moonj, and filled with saltwater and babool bark powder for the process of veg-tanning. This solution is changed around 10 to 15 times until the hide becomes stable and watertight. The hides are then sun-dried and polished with oil. After some scraping of the underside and dyeing, the hide is ready to be turned into the fabulous items we have on offer!
How Does Buffalo Leather Age And Is It Durable?
Buffalo leather is incredibly durable. The oils that are used in the end process allow for the leather to be hardwearing withstanding weather, sun and a few knocks here and there. The more you use the leather the more original it becomes.
Because it is a natural leather it already comes with its own set of beauty marks and creases that tell a story! As it is worn and used the marks only become more vivid creating wonderful patterns that carry on the life and narrative of your own memories.
Not only is it incredibly durable, but it also has a fantastically smooth texture that is soft to touch and has a velvety underside. The journals and albums come in a thinner layer of leather making them malleable, whereas the cases and bags have been reinforced to give them an extra layer of durability.
Buffalo leather truly is a fantastic material with a really eye-catching and pleasing to touch texture whilst embracing long-lasting durability. With a luxuriously full-grain surface, this type of leather is hard to pass up.
Is Buffalo Leather Ethical?
The buffalo leather we use is a by-product of the growing buffalo meat industry. We make sure to work with producers who source high-quality buffalo leather that is 100% a by-product to guarantee that it is both ethical and of a premium standard.
Our involvement in the industry does not increase the production of buffalo farming. This means we are limited in the quantity of buffalo leather that we are able to source but we feel that it is important as a Fair Trade company to maintain that ethical standard whilst providing high-quality products.
Is Buffalo Leather Treated?
The quick answer is no. Each item is made to be very durable, withstanding normal rain showers as well as ordinary wear and tear, however, it is not waterproofed. If you would like to, please feel free to further waterproof it.
How To Clean And Care For Buffalo Leather?
Buffalo leather looks great when bought and gets better with age but we know that you may want to keep your new beloved buffalo leather product as pristine as possible. For those who want to take the utmost care of their new item here is the best way to do it.
Small scratches can be removed by rubbing them gently with your finger, as the natural oils on your hands will work into the leather. For larger scratches and marks apply a tiny amount of oil to the mark, let it soak in for a few minutes and then wipe the excess away with a clean soft cloth. Always test any cream or oil on a small part first to make sure it doesn’t stain it.
